The Word Antichrist Defined
The word antichrist is found only in the new testament. It appears 4 times as the word antichrist, and once as the word antichrists. (Click here to see the verses.)

Antichrist has its roots in two words, Anti which means an opponent / substitute, who seeks to take the place of, and Christos which means the Messiah.

When you put the two words together you get the word antichrist, which means an opposser or enemy of Christ, who tries to take the place of Christ.

Great Deceptions Prophesied by Jesus
Jesus warned His followers of great deceptions that were to come that would so closely resemble truth that even His true hearted followers could be deceived. (see Matthew 24:24)

We must ask the question, would Jesus' followers be deceived by someone who was openly opposed to Christ? No. However, might Jesus' disciples be decieved by someone who was outwardly religious? Possibly, especially if they didn't pay close attention to Jesus' warnings and predictions.

Other Prophecies to Keep in Mind
In the book of Acts we see a warning by Paul that some enemies of Christ will arise from within the church. (see Acts 20:29-30)

Paul also wrote that the man of Sin, would come from within the church and that he would be a leader who exalts himself above all that is worshipped. (see 2 Thessalonians 2:3-4)

Does the Pope fit the Description and Definition of Antichrist?
The head of the Roman Catholic church is called the Pope. The Roman Catholic church thinks of itself as the "Mother" church and that all other churches fall under it's authority. Does the leader of the Catholic church, the Pope, try to 'take the place' of Jesus Christ and thus fulfill the Biblical description of the antichrist?

Let us let a recent Pope explain his role as the leader of the Catholic Church.

"Confronted with the Pope, one must make a choice. The leader of the Catholic Church is defined by the faith as the Vicar of Jesus Christ (and is accepted as such by believers). The Pope is considered the man on earth who represents the Son of God, who "takes the place" of the second person of the omnipotent God of the Trinity." Crossing the Threshold of Hope, by John Paul II page 3.
